Arrows galore will fly throughout the Washington High School auxiliary gymnasium today. The Washington Archery Club hosts their annual tournament this afternoon, competing against 13 different schools from the region.

High school archery coach Jolleen Cerka says some of the notable schools competing this weekend include: North Mahaska, Solon, Cardinal of Eldon, and Iowa Christian Academy.

Cerka says those unfamiliar with archery have an opportunity to see what the sport is all about. “We have several flights set up which means they will be shooting from 8, 9 o’ clock in the morning to 3 in the afternoon,” Cerka said, “Each school usually shoots for about an hour at each flight and then the next group comes in.”

Cerka says the each participant shoots five arrows a piece from 10 meters, and another five arrows from 15 meters away. The scores are then added together. Washington’s high school team is scheduled to shoot at 1 p.m.
