After two weeks of practice, the Washington Demon wrestlers are ready to begin their 2014-15 season. The Demons open up a busy week of wrestling this evening in Benton in a dual meet against the Bobcats, the Hartwick-Ladora-Victor Warriors, and the Iowa Valley Tigers.

Head wrestling coach Brent Van Weelden says his squad seems ready for the first match of the year. “Always a main concern is having their weights where they need to be and all of their weights are looking to be in good shape.” Van Weelden said, “Our kids are focused and it should be a pretty fun night.”

The Demons have just two seniors in starting weight classes heading into the season. Alex Gonzalez is slated to wrestle 152 this evening and Brad Skubal is going to wrestle in the 195 pound weight class.

As a team, Washington will be young across the board this season. Eight of the 14 weight classes are being held by sophomores or freshman, led by sophomores Andrew Waite and Kyle Anderson. Waite and Anderson both wrestled at the state tournament in Des Moines in February.
