The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves boys’ basketball team faced adversity early in their season opener Tuesday evening in Packwood. The Wolves started the year competing in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference game with the Pekin Panthers and walked away with a 53-47 victory.

The Wolves found themselves behind 18-12 after the first eight minutes of play. Winfield-Mount Union gained control of the contest in the middle quarters. The Wolves outscored the Panthers 31-17 in the next two periods, including a 13-5 advantage in the third to gain a 38-32 lead. Both teams scored 15 points in the final period and Winfield-Mount Union came away with a 53-47 victory over Pekin.

Winfield-Mount Union had two juniors score in double figures Tuesday night; Zach Davis scored a team high 18 points, while Garrett Baker contributed 16 in the victory.

The Wolves return to the court on Friday evening in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference battle with the Columbus Wildcats in Columbus Junction at 7:30 p.m.
