The City of Ainsworth had to replace equipment yesterday after 5,000 gallons of wastewater discharged to Long Creek. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, a pumping station in Ainsworth malfunctioned around 7 a.m. and in less than an hour 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed toward the stream.

The discharge ended when the city started a back-up pump and an estimated 80 to 85 percent of the wastewater reached the stream. By 11 a.m. yesterday, the city had replaced the malfunctioning equipment.

The Department of Natural Resources is monitoring the situation.
