As consumer drones become more readily available, legislation governing their use will likely be a topic of discussion for the state legislature this year. Legislation passed last session requires law enforcement to obtain a warrant before using a drone with video recording capabilities for an investigation.

State Representative for House District 78, Jarad Klein, was one of the legislators that worked on the bill. Klein says there still needs to be penalties for using drones to invade others’ privacy.

According to the representative, they’ll most likely put together a similar piece of legislation that would require written or verbal permission to record on private property and punish those who use drones equipped with cameras to violate the privacy of Iowans.  A similar proposal was made last year.
