Influenza is widespread in Iowa with high activity. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, many influenza-related outbreaks are happening in long term care facilities, with 42 reported in Iowa. Also, IDPH has confirmed three influenza-related deaths in children. Various strains of the flu have been reported with over 122 hospitalizations reported across the state.
Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health reminds people the best way to prevent getting the flu is to get an annual vaccine. Also wash your hands frequently and stay home when sick to prevent the spread of illness.
Across the country, 19 flu-associated pediatric deaths have been reported. And the proportion of deaths attributed to influenza and pneumonia is above the epidemic threshold.
