Fifty-one long-term care facilities in Iowa have reported influenza outbreaks. This is an increase from 42 in the last reporting week. In Region 5, which includes Southeast Iowa, three have been investigated.

Flu A and flu B with various sub-types have been confirmed by the state hygienic laboratory. The flu remains widespread in Iowa with activity listed as low to moderate.

Seven schools had 10 percent or more students absent due to illness, none of which are in Washington County. Also, 50 influenza-related hospitalizations were reported.

People are reminded to wash hands frequently, stay home when ill and to get an annual vaccine.
