Over 160 people have been hospitalized across Iowa for flu-associated cases. Iowa Department of Public Health reports two influenza-related deaths in children have been confirmed and a third is under investigation. Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health states people in Washington County have both been hospitalized for the flu and are being treated at home.

The flu remains widespread in Iowa with three types of flu A circulating and two types of flu B. IDPH still recommends getting a flu shot. Fisher says the vaccine is the best way to prevent getting the flu, even though a strain has mutated.

Also, she reminds people to wash their hands frequently, cover their coughs and stay home when ill to prevent the spread of illness.
