The Washington Demon boys basketball team (3-6 overall; 1-1 Southeast) left a lot of easy points on the floor last night. The Demons traveled to Ottuwma Friday night for a non-conference clash with the Ottuwma Bulldogs.

Eight players got into the scoring for Washington, led by senior Blake Weidman 11 points, but the Demons suffered their first loss in 2015 with a 70-52 setback to the Bulldogs. Senior Thomas Bump added 10 points, while junior Jack Giardino came off the bench and scored a season-high eight points.

Head coach Bryce Smeins says his team left too many points on the floor. “We were 9-20 from the free throw line and missed around 10 layups, maybe more than 10.” Smeins said, “When you miss 10 layups and 11 free throws (it”s hard to win ball games).”

Ottuwma lost their leading scorer, senior forward Nic Young, to foul trouble with 2:47 left in the 4th quarter with the score 58-50 in favor of Ottumwa. Three Demons players including Weidman, Giardino, and senior Daryn Sebelius all fouled out in the final minutes, and the Bulldogs finished the game on a 12-2 run to seal the victory.

Washington falls to 3-6 overall on the season. They return to the court Monday evening in a non-conference clash with the Lone Tree Lions.
