The Washington Demon wrestling team (20-1 overall) got off to a fast start in their final conference dual meet of the season last night. Washington hosted the Mount Pleasant Panthers in a Southeast Conference dual.

The Demons set the tone early with three straight first period pins on their way to a 45-24 victory over the Mount Pleasant Panthers. The victory secured an undefeated conference dual season for Washington and their second straight conference title. In all, the Demons scored four pins (all in the first period), a decision, and two forfeits in the dual win. Head coach Brent Van Weelden says prior to last year, a conference title was hard to come by, “With only five teams you would think you would every once in a while you would get a title but it had been a while (prior to last year).” Van Weelden said, “I already told the kids after we win tonight the goal is to go for a three-peat next year.”

Washington got all four of their pins in their first five matches of the night. Sophomore Karlton Skubal (182) got the evening started with a pin in 1:48 seconds. His brother, senior Brad Skubal (195) pinned his opponent in 1:53 seconds in his final regular season home match of his career. Skubal said it’s nice winning a conference title his senior year. “We are also starting a tradition here.” Skubal said, “Hopefully we can continue to win the conference title every year here.”

Sophomore Seth Townsen (220) followed with a pin in 35 seconds. After freshman Mitchell Huisenga (285) lost a 4-0 decision, sophomore Alex Latcham responded with a pin in 1:10. A regular wrestling match includes three two-minute periods.

Washington’s wrestlers return to competition tomorrow at the Solon wrestling tournament at Solon High School.
