Nine different schools from across Southeast Iowa competed in the Gary Curtis Invitational Saturday at Highland High School, including Washington, Highland and Columbus Community from the local area.

Washington head wrestling coach Brent Van Weelden was pleased with the performances from his wrestlers. “Austin Hazelett took first place at 126, along with the Skubal brothers (Karlton and Brad) at 182 and 195.” Van Weelden said, “Bryce Rickey had a good tournament at 160 taking third place, Andrew Waite also ended up third at 113.”

In addition for the Demons, sophomore Kyle Anderson finished second in the 113 weight class, junior Michael Ellingson finished second in weight class 132, and sophomore Seth Townsen finished 2nd in the 220 pound weight division.

Highland had three wrestlers finish as tournament champions of their weight classes. Sophomore Drew West finished as the top wrestler in the 113 pound weight class. His brother, sophomore Bryce West, finished in first place in the 120 pound weight division. Finally, senior Zach Kleopfer finished in first place in the 160 pound weight class.

Columbus-Winfield-Mount Union had four wrestlers finish a top their weight classes. Junior Josh Keller finished with top honors in the 106 pound weight class. Austin Edwards finished in first place in weight class 145. Tucker Morrison finished as the best wrestler in the 170 pound weight class. Finally, senior Kyle Davis won the championship match at 285 pounds.
