The State Fire Marshal Division has purchased 10,000 smoke detectors and 10,000 ten-year lithium batteries after receiving a $250,000 Assistance to Firefights Grant. A quarter of the detectors have already been picked up from numerous fire departments across the state and another 2,500 smoke detectors are still available for any fire department to claim.

Last year there were 40 confirmed fire fatalities in Iowa and two have already occurred this year. In 2012, 217 Iowans were saved by working smoke alarms.
