The Class 3A Washington boys’ basketball team (4-8 overall; 1-1 Southeast) got all they could handle from Class 1A competitor Lone Tree (10-3 overall; 9-2 SEISC) Monday evening.

As you heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the game included 18 lead-changes and 12 ties with the Demon’s leading scorer coming up huge in the final minute. With the game tied at 55, junior guard Derek Anding gave the Demons the lead for good on a turn around jump shot on the left side of the lane with 29 seconds remaining to give Washington a 57-55 lead. Anding added a free-throw in the final seconds to secure a 58-55 victory over the Lions.

Six Demons scored at least seven points last night, led by Blake Weidman’s 12 points. Anding had 11 while seniors Thomas Bump and Daryn Sebelius had nine points a pieces. Junior guard Jack Giardino came off the bench to have seven points, one game after he scored a season-high eight points in a loss to Ottuwma on Friday. Giardino had 12 points prior to the game with the Bulldogs.

Lone Tree senior Thomas Viner scored a game-high 14 points, while his brother senior Nick Viner, contributed 10 points in the loss. The victory improves Washington to 4-8 overall, while the loss drops Lone Tree to 10-3 on the season.

The Washington Demon boys’ basketball team is back in action tonight as they travel to Bloomfield Iowa for a non-conference battle with Davis County (8-5 overall). Basketball action from Davis County High School is schedule to begin at 6:15 p.m. with the junior varsity game and the varsity game set to begin at 7:45 p.m.
