In a game which featured 13 lead changes and nine ties, the Winfield-Mount Union boys’ basketball team (6-5 overall; 6-3 SEISC North) prevailed Thursday evening by their effectiveness at the free throw line. The Wolves traveled to Highland High School for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North clash with the Huskies.

After being down 60-57 heading into the fourth quarter, Winfield-Mount Union used an 18-8 run in the final eight minutes to pick up a 78-65 victory over Highland. A factor in the victory was Winfield-Mount Union’s night at the free throw line. The Wolves made 26 of 36 free throw attempts, with junior guard Zach Davis making 18 of his 19 attempts.

Winfield-Mount Union boys’ basketball coach Brad Doeering says Davis would be the first to tell you his night at the line wasn’t good enough by his standards. “The kids rattled off 19 straight made three pointers in practice, over 20 made free throws in a row in practice. “He is a kid that didn’t get going early on in the year because of a mental block and I was really proud of him tonight for stepping up and making his free throws.”

Davis led Winfield-Mount Union in scoring with 23 points and junior forward Sam Jennings added 19 points in the victory. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Winfield-Mount Union, improving the Wolves to 6-5 overall and 6-3 in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North play. The loss was the first for Highland at home this season. The Huskies dropped to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North competition.
