Several wrestlers will represent KCII area schools at the state tournament in Des Moines. Multiple wrestlers are representing Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, Sigourney-Keota, and Highland, while Lone Tree is sending one wrestler to Des Moines.

Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union is sending four wrestlers to compete in the Class 2A wrestling tournament. Junior Josh Keller (40-3 overall) is making his second straight appearance in Des Moines in the 106 pound weight class and will face Atlantic’s Kole Hansen (33-15 overall) in his first match. Keller was a medalist at last year’s tournament taking fifth place. Senior Mitchell Griffin (33-8 overall) is making his first trip to the state tournament in the 113 pound weight class. Griffin is scheduled to meet Crestwood’s Ryan Steffen in the first round. Sophomore Tucker Morrison (39-3 overall) is also making his debut appearance in the state tournament, and is scheduled to face Central Clinton’s Mason Cousins (20-12 overall). Finally, Kyle Davis (37-3 overall) is returning to the state tournament in 285 pound weight class, and will face Webster City’s Gavin Disdale (42-2 overall).

Five Sigourney-Keota wrestlers qualify for the Class 1A state tournament.. Senior Nathan Fritz (44-1 overall) is making his second straight appearance at the state tournament, this time in the 145 pound weight class. Fritz is scheduled to wrestle Lisbon’s Hunter Robinson (25-7 overall) in his first round match. Junior Lane Boender is also returning for a second straight year, qualifying in the 152 pound weight class this season. Boender has been paired with Audubon’s Trevor Smith (40-9 overall) in his initial match. Freshman Kaleb Reeves is competing at 182 pounds, and will face Maquoketa Valley’s Steve Huber (48-3 overall). Sophomore Noah Boender (31-12 overall) is also making his first appearance at the state tournament at 220 pounds, and is set to face Newman Catholic’s Colton Hansen (30-8 overall). Finally, senior Bryce Brown (27-9 overall) is finishing his high school wrestling career at the state tournament in the 285 pound bracket. He will face West Branch’s Jacob Giese (31-7 overall).

The Highland Huskies have three wrestlers qualify for the Class 1A state tournament, including two state medalist from last year. Sophomore Drew West (44-0) comes in as the undefeated number one seed of the 113 pound weight class, and is paired with Don Bosco’s Jeremy Schmitz (28-11 overall) in his first match. West won the 2014 Class 1A 106 pound state title and has 94 straight wins in his high school career. Drew’s brother, sophomore Bryce West (46-0 overall) is the undefeated number one seed of the 120 pound weight class, and is slated to battle Nodaway Valley’s Ben Freese (35-8 overall). West finished in third place in last year’s Class 1A state tournament at 113 pounds. Finally, senior Zach Kleofper (39-7 overall) is making his first appearance at the state tournament in the 160 pound weight class, and is clashing on the mat with North Butler’s Caleb Wedeking (44-4 overall).

The Lone Tree Lions are sending senior Alex Yedlik to the state tournament in the 145 pound weight class, battling West Marshall’s Chad Berrey (12-6 overall) in his first match. Yedlik, who missed the state tournament last season, represented the Lions in the 2013 Class 1A state wrestling tournament.

The Class 2A matches are scheduled from 1:30-4:30 p.m., while the Class 1A tournament is expected to start at 5 p.m. Listen to KCII throughout the afternoon for live updates form Wells Fargo Arena.
