After winning the Southeast Conference basketball title last season, the Washington Demon girls’s basketball team (6-14 overall; 0-7 Southeast) is trying to avoid going winless in league play this season. The Demons welcome the Mount Pleasant Panthers (16-4 overall; 5-2 Southeast) to Washington High School for their final regular season game of the season.

These two teams met in Mount Pleasant on Jan. 9, with the Panthers winning 73-39 over the Demons. The loss represents the worst margin of defeat for Washington against a Southeast Conference opponent this season. Three Panthers scored in double figures in the victory, led by senior Hannah Becker’s game-high 17 points. Junior guard Amber Salow had a team-high 12 points in the setback for the Demons.

The Panthers have been successfull since the first meeting with Washington, winning nine of their last 11 regular season games since Jan 9. Senior forward Kelsey Phipps is the Panthers’ leading scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game.

The Demons have won two of their last three games, with the loss coming at the hands of conference foe Fort Madison last Friday by a score of 50-28 at Washington High School. Their wins have come against Class 2A competitors the Davis County Mustangs (65-48) and Tipton Tigers (43-37).

Tonight’s girls’ basketball games between Washington and Mount Pleasant begin with the freshman game at 4:45 p.m. The junior-varsity game is scheduled for 6:15 p.m with the varsity game to follow at 7:45 p.m. at Washington High School.
