Four Washington Demon wrestlers are vying for an individual state title starting today. Sophomores Andrew Waite (113), Kyle Anderson (120), Trey Van Weelden (138), and senior Brad Skubal (195) all placed second in their respective weight classes last weekend in Fairfield to qualify to 2015 Iowa High School Athletic Association State Wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Waite (25-8 overall) is scheduled to face senior Tristan Brit (38-2) of Dubuque Wahlert in his first match. This is Waite’s second straight trip to the state tournament.

Anderson (29-7 overall) will wrestle Davenport Assumption junior Jacob Fenske (38-4 overall) in his first match. Anderson is making his second straight trip to the state tournament in Des Moines, finishing in eighth place in last year’s 113 pound weight class.

Van Weelden (32-8 overall) is scheduled to face Osage senior Brady Jennings in his first match. This is the first appearance in the state tournament, and is the son of Demon head coach Brent Van Weelden.

Finally, Skubal (40-3 overall) is challenging Sheldon/South O’Brein senior Darin Greenfield (43-0 overall), the only undefeated wrestler in the 195 pound weight class. This is the second straight trip to Des Moines for Skubal, who placed seventh in last year’s 182 pound tournament.

The Class 2A tournament begins at 1:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Listen to KCII throughout the afternoon for updates from the tournament.
