Recent struggles have hit the Highland Huskies girls’ basketball team (14-7 overall) as they enter post season play this evening The Huskies begin Class 2A Region 6 play at home against the North Mahaska Warhawks (4-17 overall).

Before their Jan. 23 clash with the Pekin Panthers, the Huskies were 12-2 and in position to take over second place in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference standings. Highland lost to Pekin 51-40, their first of four straight losses. The Huskies lost five of their final seven games of the year.

Highland is coming into postseason play off a 58-40 win against the Danville Bears (9-12 overall) in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference shootout. Senior Chelsey Lampe is Highland’s leading scorer, averaging 12.2 points per game.

North Mahaska comes into postseason competition losing their last three games, and nine of their last 10 games. Despite having just four wins, the Warhawks have the top scorer in Class 2A. Senior Julia Groenenboom has scored 471 points per game this season, an average of 22.4 points per game this season. Groenenboom is second in all of Class 2A in total points this season.
