The Iowa House’s Public Safety Committee is looking at ways to address synthetic drugs being sold in Iowa. The synthetic drugs are made by spraying chemical compounds produced overseas on organic material that burns. They’re marketed as potpourri and incense, sold online and in convenience stores, and have names such as Scooby snacks.

State Representative for House District 78, Jarad Klein, is a member of the Public Safety Committee. He says they’re working with the Attorney General’s Office and Department of Public Safety on new approaches to address this growing problem, as their current tactics are ineffective.

He explains when a chemical compound is made illegal, chemists come up with a slightly different compound to sell.
