A student at a school in Kalona did well in a state competition. The Iowa League of Cities’ If I Were Mayor Essay Contest had students write about what they would do if given the opportunity to serve as mayor of their city.

Kyleigh Graham of Wellman is a student at Mid-Prairie Middle School. She has been named one of four regional winners selected from nearly 900 essays submitted by 7th grade students from across Iowa. Graham was presented with a plaque by Governor Terry Branstad on Tuesday during the League’s Legislative Day.

In addition to the plaque, the 7th grader received a $250 scholarship, and her essay will be featured in an upcoming edition of the League’s Cityscape magazine.
