A committee consisting of Mid-Prairie and Keota staff and administrators will meet tonight to discuss their shared calendar for the 2015-2016 school year.Mark Schneider, superintendent of both districts, says using a waiver, the first day of class is traditionally prior to September 1st, the earliest a district can legally start school without the waiver.

The Department of Education announced in December that automatic waivers would no longer be granted, and that it would be more difficult to obtain one. Schneider says the governor and legislature are currently working on a compromise that would allow school to start before the 1st, but not before the Iowa State Fair is over. The districts already wait until it’s over.

Schneider shares they’ll likely have a calendar set by the end of the month.
