No cases of measles have been confirmed in Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health, as of February 5th. Although, more than 100 people in the United States from 14 states have been confirmed to have measles.

Washington County Public Health Director Danielle Pettit-Majewski states, it is always important to keep vaccinations up-to-date and at times like this when a virus is circulating it is critical to make sure your vaccinations are current. The MMR shot, or measles-mumps-rubella shot, will provide more than 99 percent of people with lifelong protection against measles with two doses of MMR. Also, two doses of MMR are required for elementary and secondary school entry in Iowa. It is recommended that adults born in 1957 or later receive at least one dose of MMR.

Measles is highly infectious and public health agencies will alert the public about a possible exposure to measles if a person is confirmed to have the disease. For more information click here.
