A local recorder’s office is warning residents to be aware of a scam being conducted through the mail and over the phone. Two Jefferson County homeowners have received mailers designed to mislead them into thinking changes had been made to their property deed and that an updated document should be obtained. The companies sending the mailers are charging up to $85 per copy.

Jefferson County Recorder Kelly Spees says homeowners can obtain a copy of their deed at the recorder’s office for a few dollars.

A homeowner in the county received a phone call on Monday that offered the same service. It’s unclear if the two scams are linked.

Spees adds other recorder’s offices in Iowa are receiving reports of similar scams.
