The results of a tree inventory in Kalona will be reviewed before action is taken this spring. Ray Lehn is the Iowa DNR Forester for District 6 which includes Washington County. Lehn and a Trees Forever representative presented the information gathered on trees located on public land to the Kalona City Council on Monday.

Lehn says one goal of conducting the tree inventory and providing recommendations is to help smaller communities prepare for the arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer. He says some of the ash trees in the city have problems, but there were no indications that their poor health was caused by the beetle.

Nineteen of the city’s 192 trees were deemed to be in need of assistance. It was recommended that three of those be removed completely. According to City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh, they’ll decide how to respond to the suggestions in the coming months. Residents can see a copy of the report at city hall.
