The Sigourney Savages girls’ basketball team (12-8 overall) helped the South Iowa Cedar League get their only victory over the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North in Thursday’s opening round of the postseason. The Savages hosted the Lone Tree Lions (8-14 overall) in the opening round of the Class 1A Region 6 tournament at Sigourney High School.

Behind a game-high 15 points from junior guard Sierra Davis, Sigourney survived a 40-34 battle with the Lone Tree Lions. Lone Tree sophomore Madison Forbes scored a team-high 12 points in the setback.

Sigourney’s victory was the only victory for a South Iowa Cedar League squad over a team from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. In Wayland, WACO defeated the Tri-County Trojans 59-27, while the Iowa Mennonite School surprised the Keota Eagles with a 38-29 victory in Keota.

The win improves Sigourney’s overall record to 12-8 and advances them to the regional quarterfinal against English Valleys in North English on Tuesday. The loss ends Lone Tree’s season at 8-14 overall.
