Sigourney Battles Danville For State Tournament Apperance

One team stands in the way of the Sigourney Savage boys’ basketball team (18-5 overall) from their first state tournament appearance in school history. The Savages will clash with the Danville Bears (24-0) of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South in the Class 1A Substate 5 championship at Fairfield High School tonight.

The Savages and Bears met in the 2013 substate final, with Danville advancing to the state tournament with a 61-29 victory. Sigourney ended the 2012-13 season with a 21-4 overall record. Danville finished the 2012-13 season as the third best team in Class 1A boys’ basketball.

This year’s Sigourney basketball team made their way to the substate final by averaging 69.6 points in their three postseason wins. The Savages averaged 59.6 points per game during the regular season. Junior Matus Stevok has scored a team-leading 441 points this season, an average of 19.2 points per game. Junior Blane Gretter is three points shy of 400 for the season, averaging 17.3 points per game.

The Bears come into the substate final with an unblemished record, winning by an average of 36.1 points per game. The only team to not be outscored by double digits by Danville this season was the Lone Tree Lions, who fell 66-63 on Feb. 13. Seniors Connor Hoelzen and Mason Spears lead the Bears in scoring, each averaging 15 points per game.
