A scam a local county recorder notified the public about earlier this month is something Washington County has dealt with. The Jefferson County Recorder’s Office warned that residents were receiving mailers designed to mislead them into thinking an updated copy of their deed should be obtained.

Washington County Recorder Jo Greiner says there haven’t been any reports recently, but they have dealt with this scam in the past. She says no one that told them about the mailer fell for the scam.

The companies sending the mail are charging up to $85 per copy. Greiner says homeowners can get a copy of their deed at the recorder’s office for around a dollar.
