The Iowa Legislature has not come to an agreement on school funding. The Iowa House has passed 1.25 percent allowable growth, while the senate passed 4 percent.

With the April 15th deadline for school districts to have their budgets certified approaching, allowable growth is being set at zero in Mid-Prairie and Keota’s budgets for next fiscal year.

According to Mark Schneider, superintendent at both districts, doing this allows them to publish at the highest tax rate possible, which cannot be raised after a budget is published. He says this is the worst case scenario, and if the house and senate settle the issue, which he expects they will, the Department of Management can lower the tax rates.
