Motorists purchased over 2.9 million gallons of E85 fuel in the fourth quarter of 2014 and over 11.9 million gallons during 2014, a record-setting amount according to the Iowa Department of Revenue. Last year’s purchases of E85 is more than a one million gallon increase from the previous record set in 2013. In Iowa, E85 is a fuel blend containing between 70 and 85 percent ethanol, which is sold at about 200 locations in Iowa.

The state has 43 ethanol refineries capable of producing more than 3.8 billion gallons annually, as well as 12 biodiesel facilities with the capacity to produce approximately 315 million gallons annually, according to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association.
