Forecasted weather over the next three days in Washington County has caused the cancellation of the biggest boys’ track meet held in Washington.

According to track coach Steve Roth, the way their season schedule is set up, the district had a small window to get the Washington Relays in . “Friday is our makeup day and it is worse than Thursday and Saturday the weather isn’t much better.” Roth said, “We really only have a window of three days to get the meet in because we have meet scheduled two times every week up until the Drake Relays.”

Roth says Mother Nature hasn’t been kind to him over the past several years, saying he has had to cancel the meet three times in the last five years alone. The Washington Relays has only been cancelled four times in Roth’s 39 years of coaching track at Washington.

Roth says at the end of the the day, the reason for the cancellation is for the safety of each team’s student athletes. “Not too many teams are deep anymore so its an issue of keeping kids healthy in the early part of the season.” Roth said, “To run the 40 degree weather with 15 mile to 25 mile per hour gusts it is just not good for the kids.”

Roth says there will be no make up date for the Washington Relays, but isn’t ruling out a chance for the Demons to join another area meet to make up for the lost event.

The forecasted weather has also cancelled the Columbus Girls’ Relay scheduled for Friday afternoon. The Demon girls’ track team was among the teams set to participate in the Columbus Relays.
