Anybody can get a traumatic brain injury at any point in their life. March is Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month and according to the Iowa Department of Public Health, more than 95,000 Iowans are living with a long-term disability due to a brain injury.

Eric Turner with JET Physical Therapy explains a traumatic brain injury is when someone has a blunt force to the head, from a car accident or a fall, and brain tissue is injured. He states that people at a higher risk of falling are also at a higher risk of having a traumatic brain injury. Turner explains what the recovery process is often challenging and lengthy, depending on severity it may include surgery, a hospital stay and changes in lifestyles.
