Despite being the opening meet of the year, senior sprinter Macy Marek looked in top form Thursday afternoon. Washington held their annual Demon Indoor Invitational yesterday on the campus of Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

The meet featured athletes from all across southern and central Iowa including from: Anamosa, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Central Lee, Clayton Ridge, Davenport Central, Des Moines Lincoln, Iowa City High, Iowa City Regina, Iowa City West, Linn-Mar, Mount Vernon, Solon, and Williamsburg High Schools.

Marek ran 60 meters in 8.23 seconds to take first place in the event, besting the other competitor by nearly two-tenths of a second. Marek was the only Washington finisher to place in the top five in an event.

Other top ten finishers for the Demons included junior McKayla Miller, who finished in eighth place in the shot put competition with a throw of 33′ 0.50″. Sophomore Jessie Buchholz finished in ninth place in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 10.78 seconds.

Washington’s girls’ track team won’t return to competition again until Saturday, March 21, when they will compete in the Central Indoor Invitational in Pella.
