For the second time in three years, the Sigourney Savages boys’ basketball team falls one game short of their first state tournament appearance in school history. The Savages clashed with the Danville Bears in the Class 1A Substate 5 championship game at Fairfield High School with the Bears coming away with a 78-29 victory.

Sigourney junior guard Blaine Gretter accounted for 18 of the Savages 29 points in the setback. Twenty-nine points is the lowest offensive output of the season by the Savages, who lost to the Bears in the substate final 61-29 during the 2012-13 season.

The win advances Danville into next week’s state tournament. The loss ends Sigourey’s season with an overall mark of 18-6.
