After leading the Sigourney Savage boys’ basketball team to the substate final for the second time in three years, one Savage has been named one of the postseason’s best players.

Sigourney junior forward Blaine Gretter was selected to the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 1A All-Substate Team. He and the Savages competed in the Substate five bracket. In four postseason basketball games this season, Getter averaged 19 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Gretter contributed 55 percent of the Savages’ points in their substate final game versus Danville, scoring 16 points in a 78-29 setback to the Bears.

With eligibility uncertainty around junior Matus Stevko, Gretter could return next season as the Savages leading scorer and rebounder. Stevko, who averaged a South Iowa Cedar League leading 20 points per game last season, is a foreign exchange student from Slovakia whose visa runs out at the end of the school year.

If Stevko can return for his senior season, the Savages would return the top two scorers in the conference from last season. According to head coach Mitch Essik, he should know more about Stevko’s eligibility by the end of the school year.
