Opening up spring practice, the Washington Demon girls’ golf team has several athletes returning who experienced last year’s state golf tournament. Last year’s Demon girls’ golf team qualified for the Class 4A State Golf tournament in Ames, finishing in eighth place out of the eight team field.

Washington girls’ golf coach Len Kull says he has seen an increase in early season numbers, with eight girls out for golf this spring compared to six last season.

The Demons’ best returning golfer is senior Sarah Waite, whose average 18 hole score was 93 during her junior season. Waite finished last year’s state golf tournament with a two round score of 194, tied for the 26th best score at the tournament.

Other returners for the Demon girls’ golf team are junior Denna Peiffer, junior Brenna Burlingame, and sophomore Brenna Weidman.

Among the four newcomers, three are freshmen. Kull says his freshmen golfers include: Sarah Nacos, Megan Strabla, and Tiffany Poland. The other newcomer is senior Meredith Lumburg.

Washington’s girls’ golf team will compete for the first time this spring on Thursday, April 9, in a varsity tournament in Keokuk.
