The Washington High School wrestling team capped off a monumental season with their team awards banquet Tuesday evening at Washington High School. Among the individual awards handed out at the banquet included: state qualifiers, All-Conference selections, Academic All-Conference, the Silver Headgear Award, most points scored, most takedowns, and most pins.

Senior Brad Skubal (195) collected the most accolades on the evening, receiving recognition for being the state runner up in his weight class. He was also named the Southeast Conference’s Wrestler of the Year, a First Team All-Conference selection, and was the wrestler with the most takedowns and team points scored this season.

Sophomore Kyle Anderson (120) was the only other Washington wrestler who was a First Team All-Conference selection. Anderson finished in eighth place at the state tournament.

All-Conference Academic honors go to seniors Caitlin Moravec, Paige Letcher, and Kaitlin Hora along with junior Bryce Rickey (160). The award represents the students who have a cumulative 3.25 grade point average. Rickey was also named a Second Team All-Conference honoree.

The Silver Headgear Award went to senior Alex Gonzalez (145). The award represents the person who put in the most work during the season. Gonzalez, a Second Team All-Conference selection, finished the year 19-4, but an elbow injury prevented him from qualifying for the district and state tournaments.

Other Second Team All-Conference selections include: sophomore Alex Latcham (106; 25-11), sophomore Andrew Waite (113; 27-10), sophomore Trey Van Weelden (138; 32-10), and sophomore Seth Townsen (220; 21-11). Waite and Van Weelden qualified for the state tournament, but were eliminated prior to the medal round.

This season proved to be a record setting one for the Washington wrestling team. The Demons recorded 26 dual wins, the most in school history, including an undefeated Southeast Conference slate. The team also set the school record for most escapes in one season with 234. Ten wrestlers finished the season with over 20 wins, tied for the most in school history. Five wrestlers finished with over 30 wins, one shy of tying the school record.
