Winfield-Mount Union’s second-year boys’ track coach has been impressed with the early competition taking place at practice. Like most teams across southeast Iowa last week, head coach Brad Doerreing had his track athletes outside to practice in the rare mild temperatures for early March.

Among the 30 athletes out this season, Doerring returns many experienced athletes in several events. On the track, junior Garrett Baker returns as the team’s top sprinter, running an personal best 11.89 100 meter dash last season. Sophomore Gavin Bencze has been penciled in as the Wolves’ top distance runner. Bencze ran the 3200 meter dash in a team-best 10:25.60 last season.

In the field events, senior Kyle Davis returns as the team’s top shot put and discuss thrower from last season. Davis threw the shot put in 45′ 1.50″ while he threw the discuss 124″ 4.75″. Senior Colton Hinkle is seen as a threat in the throwing events as well, throwing the shot put last year with a season-best 36″ 11.00′ and the discuss in 115″. Sophomore Bryce Robinson returns as the team’s long jumper posting a 19″ 5.50′ jump last season.

The Wolves’ first meet is scheduled for Monday, March 30, at the West Burlington Invitational.
