A long standing boys’ track record at WACO High School was broken Friday evening in Washington. The Warrior boys’ and girls’ track teams competed in the Demon Relays held at Case Field in Washington.

The boys’ track team had two notable performances from junior sprinter Bryce Achen. Achen ran the 100 meter dash in 10.79 seconds, one-tenth of a second slower than first place finisher Maurico Ramirez of Columbus.

WACO boys’ track coach Shannon Rugg says Achen’s time broke not only the Demon Relay record of 11.01 seconds, he tops the school record books. “The old time was 10.83 set back in 1989 by Kevin Roth, who was in my class and went onto to win state in the 100 and 200 meter dash and placed in the long jump and Bryce ran the 100 tonight in 10.79.”

Achen says his performance in the 100 meter dash last night was big. “It feels good to set a record, I just hope I can keep bringing my time down every time out up to state.”

Achen’s run is currently the best 100 meter dash time in Class 1A and is the second fastest time in the state.

Another highlight for the Warriors boys’ track team is senior Brayden Blake, who ran the 800 meter dash in 2:06.71. Blake finished in first place, nearly six second faster than the second place finisher, Warrior freshman B.J Rogers.

Despite beating the competition, Blake believes he can perform better. “I am not satisfied with 2:06, I need to keep bringing it down.” Blake said, “I want to place at state and 2:06 won’t cut it.”

The girls’ track team recorded a first place finish in the 4×200 meter relay. The team, which consisted of Trilby Frier, Jennie Green, Hallie Kissell, and Angelique Frier crossed the finish line in 1:54.90.

The boys’ took sixth place out of seven teams with 60 points. The girls’ squad took fifth out of five teams with 62 points. WACO was the only Class 1A squad in either division competing at the Demon Relays.
