The Washington Demons girls’ track team has gotten off to a fast start in their first week of outdoor competitions. Washington competed against seven other region teams in the Bullette Relays at Mediapolis High School and finished in second place with 101 points.

Washington senior Macy Marek added two first place finishes to her week, winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Marek won the 100 meter dash in 13.01 seconds and the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.36. On Tuesday, Marek won the 200 meter dash competition in the Falcon Relays in 26.98 seconds.

Washington also won the 4X100 meter, 4X800 meter, and distance medley events. The Demons’ 4×100 meter relay featured senior Macy Marek, junior Amber Salow, sophomore Makenzi Marek, and freshman Makenna Rich, finishing in 52.83 seconds. The 4×800 meter relay team featured senior Stephanie Gutierrez, sophomore Mariah Howard, freshman Brooke Stout, and freshman Megan Mitchell, concluding the event in 11:01.24. The distance medley squad was highlighted by senior Addison Gaal, Salow, junior Makenzie Knutson, and freshman Kayla Andrew, closing the event in 4:45.91.

Junior Emme Keith had a second place finish in the 1500 meter run, crossing the line in 5:36.60.

Two Demon underclassmen were among the top three finishers in the 800 meter dash. Sophomore Mariah Howard crossed the finish line in 2:42.47, the second best time at the meet. Freshman Brooke Stout completed the event right behind Howard with a time of 2:45.83.

Washington took second place following Pekin. The Demon girls’ track team will return to competition next Thursday in the Raider Relays at Williamsburg High School.
