Early season competition resumes this afternoon for the Washington Demon boys’ golf teams in Columbus Junction. The Demons are scheduled to play nine holes of golf at the Cedar Crest Golf Course in Columbus Junction in a triangular meet against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and the Columbus Wildcats.

A tie breaker helped the Washington Demon boys’ golf team capture their first conference dual win of the season on Friday against the Mount Pleasant Panthers. Windy conditions at the Washington Golf and Country Club elevated each team’s combined score, with both squads deadlocked at 149 entering the clubhouse. In the event of a tie in high school golf, the first tiebreaker is the lowest score between the two club’s fifth place golfer. Washington’s fifth place golfer was freshman Dalton Meyers, who completed his first varsity meet in 45 strokes. His score was three shots better than Mount Pleasant’s fifth place golfer Sam Van De Burg.

Sophomore Tanner Coleman had the Demons’ best scorecard from the event, ending his competition in 40 strokes. Junior Derek Anding was one shot off Coleman to finish in second place.

The Golden Hawks’ starting six consisted of sophomores and freshmen. Sophomore Seth Mann goes into the match this afternoon as Mid-Prairie’s top golfer, averaging 50 strokes per nine holes of golf this season. Sophmore Duncan McCain is currently the Golden Hawks’ second best golfer, sitting three strokes behind Mann.

The Wildcats’ top golfer this season is senior Chase Finke. Finke enters this afternoon’s match with an average nine hole score of 38. Senior Ethan Leyden is five strokes behind Finke, sitting in second place on the squad.

The competition tees off at 4 p.m. at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Columbus.
