A new season of Washington Demon boys’ soccer kicks off this evening in Wellman. The Demons are set to square off against a county rival in the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks (0-2 overall) at the Wellman Recreation Complex.

Washington finished the 2014 season with a 7-8 overall record, sharing the Southeast Conference title with the Fairfield Trojans. Senior Joe Smith returns as the leading scorer for the Demons, putting eight goals in the back of the net last season.

These two teams met last season with Mid-Prairie coming away with a 2-1 victory in Washington.

The 10th ranked Golden Hawks come into tonight’s non-conference clash having already played two regular season matches against opponents ranked in the top five. In their season opener last Monday, Mid-Prairie clashed against the Clear Creek Amana Clippers at the Wellman Recreation Complex. The match pitted two ranked teams as the Clippers were ranked fourth in the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association’s Class 2A preseason poll, while the Golden Hawks were sixth in the association’s Class 1A poll. Mid-Prairie forced the match into overtime, but gave up the game winning goal with 14 seconds left in the extra period to fall 2-1.

Mid-Prairie’s next game came yesterday afternoon against the Iowa City Regina Regals in a rematch of last year’s Class 1A State Championship match at Iowa City Regina High School. The Golden Hawks lost the game 8-0.

Tonight’s non-conference soccer match between the Washington Demons and the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks kicks off at 6 p.m. at the Wellman Recreation Complex. Listen to tomorrow’s KCII sports page for results and look for pictures of the game on KCII Radio’s Facebook Page.
