Strong winds in Washington County challenged the Washington Demon girls’ golf team Monday afternoon. The Demons held their home opener yesterday against their Southeast Conference rival the Mount Pleasant Panthers at the Washington Golf and Country Club. Washington came away with the dual victory 189-204.

Twenty mile per hour winds out of the west increased scores for both squads. Washington freshman Sarah Nacos came away as the medalist for a third straight meet to start her varsity golf career, completing her nine hole round in 42 strokes.

Nacos, who came into yesterday with a nine hole average of 35 strokes, said playing in windy conditions can affect your score greatly. “If it is coming at you really hard it can, it can be three or four clubs worth.” Nacos said, “You can be hitting a nine iron from 100 yards away and if the wind is coming at you hard, all of a sudden you can be hitting with a seven iron. If you aren’t really lengthy (on your shot) it can be tough.”

Washington girls’ golf coach Len Kull says despite the weather conditions, he continues to be pleased with the progress of his team, “Any score under 90 is outstanding (in these conditions), it just is.” Kull said, “Yeah the wind was kind of tough but I wouldn’t classify this as a terrible day. We could have played in the rain, but no doubt the wind was a factor.”

Washington junior Denna Peiffer finished second overall in the meet, entering the clubhouse with a 45 on her scorecard. Senior Sarah Waite finished her round in 48 strokes.

The Demon girls’ golf team has a quick turnaround as they host a non-conference triangular this afternoon against Pella and Ottumwa. Tee time is set for 4 p.m. at the Washington Golf and Country Club.
