The Columbus Wildcat boys’ soccer team will be busy over the next week. The Wildcat, who is ranked ninth in the latest Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association’s Class 1A poll, are scheduled to play four games over the next seven days, including tonight’s season opener at Wapello High School against the Indians.

The Wildcats are coming off an 11-4-1 season and the program’s first ever trip to the state tournament. Despite losing 75 percent of the scoring off last year’s squad, head coach Luis Cacho returns a nucleolus of underclassman who he feels can fill the void. Sophomore Ruben Paz returns as the team’s leading scorer. Paz scored five goals last season. Sophomore Eric Canterero added 2 goals and six assists last year as a freshman. Senior Angel Rodriguez and sophomore Alejando Hernandez also scored two goals last year for the Wildcats.

The Indians ended the 2014 season with a 5-10 overall record. Columbus shut out the Wapello Indians 5-0 last season in Columbus.

The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. from Wapello High School.
