It was the home opener for the Iowa Mennonite School boys’ soccer team (1-1) as they took on the Highland Huskies (2-2) Thursday. It would come down to penalty kicks after two overtime periods with IMS pulling away with the victory 4-3.

The game started out with three quick goals, two of them scored by IMS in the first three minutes of play. Senior Danny Lam would score for IMS with freshman Cole Ours scoring a minute later making the score 2-1 early in the first half. Highland would answer right back with two breakaway goals making the score 3-2 Highland at half.

In the second half, Lam was able to make the score even at 3-3. The game would go into overtime with both teams working hard to get that golden goal, but the game would ultimately be settled with penalty kicks.

Senior Kirby Shetler kicked first for IMS and scored the first penalty kick. Highland responded with a gowl of their own, making it 1-1. IMS senior Michael Hershberger scored on the second kick and IMS keeper Kobi Russom blocked Highland’s second attempt, making it 2-1 IMS. The third round of shots came with Russom scoring and Highland scoring, with IMS still ahead by one, 3-2. In the fourth round of kicks, Lam found the net and the victory for IMS.

Russom had 18 saves on the day. IMS will host Burlington Notre Dame (1-3) on Tuesday.
