When the Drake Relay qualifiers were announced over the weekend, Washington senior sprinter Macy Marek found herself eight spots away from position in the 100 meter dash competition. In case of any dropouts or teams declining their invitation, Washington head coach Stefaine Tschantz signed Marek up as one of the first alternates in the relays.

The decision paid off Wednesday morning, as Tschantz received a call from relay organizers letting her know Marek had a last minute invitation to Des Moines. The team accepted the invitation and Marek will compete at 8:31 a.m. Friday against 31 of the fastest girls in Iowa.

Marek said excited about an opportunity to run against the state’s quickest girls but will have to miss tonight’s Demon Relays at Case Field. “It is sad because it is my senior year and my final meet on Washington’s track.” Marek said, “I am definitely willing to give it up for the Drake Relays.”

Marek’s fastest 100 meter dash time came at the co-ed Demon Relays on April 10th, crossing the finish line in 12.78 seconds.

The Demon Relays are set to be run this afternoon and evening at Case Field in Washington. Washington hosts track teams from Benton Community, Clear Creek Amana, Fort Madison, Iowa City, and Mount Pleasant.

The events for tonight’s Demon Relays begins at 4:30 p.m.
