The Washington City Council has directed staff to prepare an ordinance for review that would allow council to permit special exemptions to the current prohibition of alcohol in Central Park.

The request for this came from Main Street Washington and the Washington Chamber of Commerce. Main Street Washington director Sarah Sadrakula said it would be similar to events held in the past, but instead of taking up the streets and parking, it would be in Central Park. Michelle Redlinger, director of the chamber, said this would allow events to use the bandstand. Redlinger added it would be nice to host a wine tasting in the park.

Councilmember Bob Shellmyer spoke against it. Mayor Sandra Johnson reiterated that the proposal would give council discretion whether to allow alcohol in the park for certain events.

The ordinance only relates to Central Park and will go through three readings. The directive passed with a 4-1 vote.
