Iowa farmers are expected to plant less corn than last year while increasing the amount of acres they devote to soybeans. The USDA’s Prospective Planting report released yesterday estimates soybean acreage will be a record breaking 10.1 million, up 200,000 from 2014. Corn acreage is anticipated to be around 13.6 million, down 100,000 acres from last year.

Producers locally and nationally are coming off of a record harvest. In 2014, southeast Iowa produced nearly 175 million bushels of corn, three million more bushels than in 2013, and over 41 million bushels of soybeans, an increase of one million. Washington County averaged 191 bushels per acre for corn and 54 bushels for soybeans.
