A junior on the Columbus boys’ track team owns the 100 meter dash record at the Demon Relays after his performance Friday evening at Case Field.

Junior Maurico Ramirez sprinted 100 meters in 10.78 seconds last night, edging WACO junior Bryce Achen by one-tenth of the second for first place honors. Both athletes eclipsed the relay’s previous 100 dash record of 11.01 seconds set by Austin Atwood of Libertyville back in 2009.

Ramirez says he remembers when he wasn’t the fastest athlete competing. “I remember going up against really fast competition when I was a freshman and sophomore.” Ramirez said, “Guys from Washington and from all over. It was fun to run against people faster than me and now I am a little older and more experienced.”

Ramirez also took first place honors in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 23.21 seconds. Ramirez edged WACO’s Achen in the event by nearly three-tenths of a second.

Columbus’s Devon Henry came away as the meet’s top high jumper, clearing six feet in the competition.

The Wildcats boys’ team placed fourth with 69 points. The Wildcat girls’ track team also competed Friday night, also placing fourth with 68 points.
