The Iowa Utilities Board is still accepting public comment on a proposed oil pipeline that would travel through Jefferson, Keokuk and Wapello counties. According to Don Tormey, with the utilities board, objections, comments and letters of support are being compiled as the utilities board reviews the petition for a hazardous liquid pipeline permit filed by Dakota Access, LLC in January. The pipeline would cut across Iowa, carrying crude oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota to southern Illinois.

A majority of the objections filed so far concern the environment and public health. Those who have submitted letters of support say the pipeline will create jobs and reduce the country’s reliance on oil from foreign countries.
