Tomorrow is the last day to file timely tax returns. People can also request a six-month extension by filling out form 4868, which can be found on the Internal Revenue Service’s website IRS.gov. This year most e-filed receipts were done by tax professionals with only 42 percent being self-prepared, a 4.5 percent increase from last year. The average refund across the United States is about $3,000, a 1.9 percent increase from last year.

It is the first year in Iowa that an adoption tax credit is available. Social security benefits are not subject to the Iowa income tax. Also, the credit has been increased to $100 for volunteer firefighters, EMS and reserve peace officers. The deadline is April 15th for timely returns.
